Madonna The Celebration Tour
đ¶ Weâre gonna party (It's a celebration) đ¶
Lâiconique Madonna is back ! Au programme du Celebration Tour ? Quatre shows dĂ©mesurĂ©s pour fĂȘter 40 ans dâune carriĂšre lĂ©gendaire.
SIXTH AND FINAL LONDON SHOW ADDED

Michael Jackson - Thriller 40th Anniversary
Worldâs biggest-selling album with over 100 million sales
Experience the worldâs biggest-selling album with over 100 million in sales â and the first album to be certified triple Diamond by the RIAA â on this new Thriller 40th Anniversary 2CD set.
Disc 1: Michael Jacksonâs 1982 smash album Thriller changed pop music forever. This original album, featuring seven top 10 hits including Billie Jean, Beat It and Thriller, helped Michael win a record-setting eight Grammy Awards in one night.
Disc 2: Features Thriller-era bonus material including previously unreleased demos.
Michael first wrote and started work on this song in 1980 but was still working on it in February 1982 and considered it as a song for the Thriller album.
When it failed to make the cut for Thriller, Michael considered it again for The Jacksonsâ Victory album but chose to contribute three other songs to that album: State of Shock, Be Not Always (co-written with his brother Marlon) and The Hurt (co-written with his brother Randy, David Paich and Steve Porcaro). This demo has never been released previously.

The 45 King
The 45 King first gained fame with his breakbeat track The 900 Number in 1987. The song featured a looping of a baritone sax solo from Marva Whitney’s Unwind Yourself (1968). The 45 King signed with Tuff City Records that year and was given a production deal. The 900 Number remains his signature work, having been resampled by many artists. He was also featured on the 1989-Hustlers Convention album on the UK label Music of Life, which is considered by many to be hip-hop’s first-ever live album.
In the early 1990s, drug addiction caused him to lose a production deal that he signed with Warner Bros. Records. Around this time, the 45 King released multiple series of breakbeat records (the Lost Breakbeat series, the Breakapalooza series, etc.) and remixed Madonna’s Top-10 single Keep It Together, but he stayed mainly with his breakbeat record franchises.
In 1996, Washington, D.C.-based go-go artist DJ Kool had a hit with the song Let Me Clear My Throat. It was call-and-response vocals over a chopped half of the 900 Number beat. DJ Kool did not just sample the track: he also acknowledged the 45 King as the song’s originator. The 45 King then remixed the track for Kool.
In 1998, the 45 King produced Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem) for Jay-Z. The song was a hit and featured a looped chorus from the original cast album of the Broadway musical Annie. In an interview, Jay-Z spoke on the 45 King’s importance to hip hop and called him a true pioneer of the business. In 2000, he produced the platinum-certified track Stan by Eminem.
The 45 King died on October 19, 2023, at the age of 62. R.I.P.

About RUN DMC:
Queens, New York, US Run-D.M.C. Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine Run-DMC (also spelled Run-D.M.C.) was an American hip hop group from Hollis, Queens, New York City, founded in 1983 by Joseph Simmons, Darryl McDaniels, and Jason Mizell. Run-DMC is regarded as one of the most influential acts in the history of hip hop culture and one of the most famous hip hop acts of the 1980s.
Run-DMC (also formatted Run-D.M.C., RUN DMC, or some combination thereof) was an American hip hop group from Hollis, Queens, New York City, formed in 1983 by Joseph Simmons, Darryl McDaniels, and Jason Mizell. Run-DMC is regarded as one of the most influential acts in the history of hip hop culture and especially one of the most famous hip hop acts of the 1980s. Along with Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, and Public Enemy, the group pioneered new-school hip hop music and helped usher in the golden age of hip hop. The group was among the first to highlight the importance of the MC and DJ relationship.
More than any other hip-hop group, Run-D.M.C. are responsible for the sound and style of the music. As the first hardcore rap outfit, the trio set the sound and style for the next decade of rap. With their spare beats and excursions into heavy metal samples, the trio were tougher and more menacing than their predecessors Grandmaster Flash and Whodini. In the process, they opened the door for both the politicized rap of Public Enemy and Boogie Down Productions, as well as the hedonistic gangsta fantasies of N.W.A. At the same time, Run-D.M.C. helped move rap from a singles-oriented genre to an album-oriented one – they were the first hip-hop artist to construct full-fledged albums, not just collections with two singles and a bunch of filler. By the end of the ’80s, Run-D.M.C. had been overtaken by the groups they had spawned, but they continued to perform to a dedicated following well into the ’90s.
All three members of Run-D.M.C. were natives of the middle-class New York borough Hollis, Queens. Run (born Joseph Simmons, November 14, 1964) was the brother of Russell Simmons, who formed the hip-hop management company Rush Productions in the early ’80s; by the mid-’80s, Russell had formed the pioneering record label Def Jam with Rick Rubin. Russell encouraged his brother Joey and his friend Darryl McDaniels (born May 31, 1964) to form a rap duo. The pair of friends did just that, adopting the names Run and D.M.C., respectively. After they graduated from high school in 1982, the pair enlisted their friend Jason Mizell (born January 21, 1965) to scratch turntables; Mizell adopted the stage name Jam Master Jay.
In 1983, Run-D.M.C. released their first single, It’s Like That"/“Sucker M.C.’s,”_ on Profile Records. The single sounded like no other rap at the time – it was spare, blunt, and skillful, with hard beats and powerful, literate, daring vocals, where Run and D.M.C.’s vocals overlapped, as they finished each other’s lines. It was the first new school hip-hop recording. It’s Like That became a Top 20 R&B hit, as did the group’s second single, Hard Times/Jam Master Jay. Two other hit R&B singles followed in early 1984 – Rock Box and 30 Days – before the group’s eponymous debut appeared.
King of Rock
By the time of their second album, 1985’s King of Rock, Run-D.M.C. had become the most popular and influential rappers in America, already spawning a number of imitators. As the King of Rock title suggests, the group were breaking down the barriers between rock & roll and rap, rapping over heavy metal records and thick, dense drum loops. Besides releasing the King of Rock album and scoring the R&B hits King of Rock, You Talk Too Much, and Can You Rock It Like This in 1985, the group also appeared in the rap movie Krush Groove, which also featured Kurtis Blow, the Beastie Boys, and the Fat Boys.
Raising Hell
Run-D.M.C.’s fusion of rock and rap broke into the mainstream with their third album, 1986’s Raising Hell. The album was preceded by the Top Ten R&B single My Adidas, which set the stage for the group’s biggest hit single, a cover of Aerosmith’s Walk This Way. Recorded with Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Walk This Way was the first hip-hop record to appeal to both rockers and rappers, as evidenced by its peak position of number four on the pop charts. In the wake of the success of Walk This Way, Raising Hell became the first rap album to reach number one on the R&B charts, to chart in the pop Top Ten, and to go platinum, and Run-D.M.C. were the first rap act to received airplay on MTV – they were the first rappers to cross over into the pop mainstream. Raising Hell also spawned the hit singles You Be Illin’ and It’s Tricky.
Tougher Than Leather
Run-D.M.C. spent most of 1987 recording Tougher Than Leather, their follow-up to Raising Hell. Tougher Than Leather was accompanied by a movie of the same name. Starring Run-D.M.C., the film was an affectionate parody of ’70s blaxploitation films. Although Run-D.M.C. had been at the height of their popularity when they were recording and filming Tougher Than Leather, by the time the project was released, the rap world had changed. Most of the hip-hop audience wanted to hear hardcore political rappers like Public Enemy, not crossover artists like Run-D.M.C. Consequently, the film bombed and the album only went platinum, failing to spawn any significant hit singles.
Back from Hell
Two years after Tougher Than Leather, Run-D.M.C. returned with Back From Hell, which became their first album not to go platinum. Following its release, both Run and D.M.C. suffered personal problems as McDaniels suffered a bout of alcoholism and Simmons was accused of rape. After McDaniels sobered up and the charges against Simmons were dismissed, both of the rappers became born-again Christians, touting their religious conversion on the 1993 album Down With the King. Featuring guest appearances and production assistance from artists as diverse as Public Enemy, EPMD, Naughty by Nature, A Tribe Called Quest, Neneh Cherry, Pete Rock, and KRS-One, Down With the King became the comeback Run-D.M.C. needed. The title track became a Top Ten R&B hit and the album went gold, peaking at number 21. Although they were no longer hip-hop innovators, the success of Down With the King proved that Run-D.M.C. were still respected pioneers.
Crown Royal
After a long studio hiatus, the trio returned in early 2000 with Crown Royal. The album did little to add to their ailing record sales, but the following promotional efforts saw them join Aerosmith and Kid Rock for a blockbuster performance on MTV. By 2002, the release of two greatest-hits albums prompted a tour with Aerosmith that saw them travel the U.S., always performing Walk This Way to transition between their sets. Sadly, only weeks after the end of the tour, Jam Master Jay was senselessly murdered in a studio session in Queens. Only 37 years old, the news of his passing spread quick and hip-hop luminaries like Big Daddy Kane and Funkmaster Flex took the time to pay tribute to him on New York radio stations. Possibly the most visible DJ in the history of hip-hop, his death was truly the end of an era and unfortunately perpetuated the cycle of violence that has haunted the genre since the late ’80s.

About The Pharcyde:
The Pharcyde (pronounced “far side”) is an American alternative hip-hop group, formed in 1989, from South Central Los Angeles. The original four members of the group are Imani (Emandu Wilcox), Slimkid3 (Trevant Hardson), Bootie Brown (Romye Robinson), and Fatlip (Derrick Stewart). DJ Mark Luv was the group’s first disc jockey (DJ), followed by producer J-Swift and then J Dilla.
The group is perhaps best known for the hit singles Drop, Passin’ Me By and Runnin’’, as well as their first album, Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde. Pharcyde continues to tour and record, both collaboratively and in solo projectsâthe most recent being Hardson’s collaborative EP with the award-winning DJ Nu-Mark (of Jurassic 5) released in 2014 on Delicious Vinyl.
Pharcyde group members Slimkid3, Bootie Brown, and Imani met as dancers in the late 1980s and dancing was their main ambition as late as 1990. Around this time, Imani and Slimkid3 were in a group called As Is and later a group called the Play Brothers, whilst Bootie Brown was a backup dancer for Fatlip (Fatlip being the last member to join the group). Bootie Brown recalls that their earlier dancing careers influenced their rapping â sometimes the way I rap is almost like the way I used to dance. The group met Reggie Andrews, a local high-school music teacher who worked with the Dazz Band and Rick James, and who was a major musical influence on their debut album. The group also met producer J-Swift around this time, as he was Reggie Andrews’s star pupil according to the book Check the Technique.
Though Humboldt Beginnings is to date the last Pharcyde album, its members have since been keeping busy with various contributions and projects. A compilation of The Pharcyde was released in 2005, titled Sold My Soul: The Remix & Rarity Collection, featuring a number of remixes and rare songs. Former member Fatlip released his solo debut in 2005, titled The Loneliest Punk, and Tre Hardson’s second full-length solo album SLIMKID3’s Cafe was released on April 4, 2006.
2012 saw the twentieth anniversary of The Pharcyde’s debut Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde, and to mark the event Fatlip and SlimKid3 teamed up with the album’s producers, J-Swift and L.A. Jay, as well as record label Delicious Vinyl, to play the album in its entirety at a tribute show at The Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles. The performance was intended to be a one-off, but due to overwhelming success and reception, the group began touring the show ‘Bizarre Ride Live’, and, along with MC K-Natural, working on original music under the moniker The Bizarre Ride. In December of that year, The Pharcyde released the Amerigo Gazaway-produced Still Got Love (Bizarre Tribe Megamix) garnering significant praise. 2015 marked the twentieth anniversary of Labcabincalifornia, resulting in a similar tour through Europe and Japan. The group continued touring Europe through 2017.

About the Artist
George Michael 1963-2016
Itâs 35 years since Careless Whisperâ** started George Michaelâs solo career, a solo career which re-defined popular music. And this year, Georgeâs legacy has been further enhanced by the auction of his private art collection and by Last Christmas, the forthcoming blockbuster film based on Wham!âs hit âLast Christmasâ.
Georgeâs unexpected death on Christmas Day 2016 resulted in an outpouring of grief across the globe. And then there was the music he left us, both as half of Wham! alongside Andrew Ridgeley and as a groundbreaking, globe-conquering solo superstar. As the world knew, George made special music, searingly honest, expertly crafted, but always full of heart, soul and passion; music that will last for decades to come.
Since he entered our lives in 1982 with the ground-breaking slice of exuberance that was âWham! Rap (Enjoy What You Do)â, George Michael sold over 120 million albums. He topped charts from Austria to Australia. He sold-out stadiums from Tokyo to Tampa. He re-defined popular music with âFaithâ, his debut solo album of 1987 and he subsequently crafted a substantial, enormously popular body of work.
Perhaps, though, the real starting point is Radlett, a commuter town of 60,000 souls, north-west of London, where some scenes of Stanley Kubrickâs A Clockwork Orange were filmed. Itâs where young Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou (born 25 June 1963) and his loving, tightly bound, part-Greek-Cypriot, part-English family moved from their original North London home. Like teenagers the world over, George and his best friend, fellow Bushey Meads Comprehensive pupil Andrew Ridgeley, would dream of pop stardom, of making it big: I wanted to be loved, admitted George. âIt was an ego satisfaction thingâ. Deep down, the pair of dreamers understood that it wasnât going to happen. These things just didnât happen.
In fact, these things do occasionally happen and, as Wham!, the duo would encapsulate the early-â80s. From that first single to their last, 1986âs âThe Edge Of Heaven/Where Did Your Heart Goâ, they sold 25 million records and they departed in a blaze of glory before 72,000 people at Wembley Stadium on June 26 1986, their friendship as strong at the end as it was in the beginning. Wham! never got old and never lost their exclamation mark, but along the way, George won the first of three Ivor Novello Songwriter Of The Year awards in 1985. They had two US Number 1 singles and their American Number 1 album was titled âMake It Bigâ to commemorate those Bushey Meads dreams. They became the first western band to play China and George began his long but mercifully mostly undocumented commitment to charity work on Band Aidâs âDo They Know Itâs Christmasâ and by donating Wham! royalties from their âLast Christmasâ/âEverything She Wantsâ single to Ethiopian famine relief.

Boy George is a British singer, known for his flamboyant and androgynous image, who once fronted the band Culture Club.
The early 1980s were filled with pop stars who seemed larger than life, but very few cut as indelible figure as Boy George. During the heyday of Culture Club – which lasted from their first hit, Do You Really Want to Hurt Me, in 1982 until 1984 – Boy George deftly blended soulful authenticity with knowing artificiality, singing songs inspired by Motown while embracing androgyny. This sly wit was as evident onscreen as it was on record, which is why Culture Club not only became one of the biggest groups on MTV, but why George managed to sustain a long, lasting career following the band’s implosion in 1986. The road wasn’t easy for Boy George. His initial solo recordings after Culture Club didn’t find a wide audience outside of Europe, and he would be occasionally battle drug abuse, but during the ’90s, he found a secure footing within electronic dance music, recording his own singles and earning a reputation as a DJ that would last into the 21st century.
Boy George would also often circle back into the mainstream, scoring a big hit in 1992 with his version of “The Crying Game,” which functioned as the theme to the film of the same name, and racking up a host of Tony nominations for Taboo, the 2004 musical loosely based on his life. With this success behind him, he was the rare New Waver who turned into a pop survivor, sustaining a career that alternated between solo work, DJ’ing, and reuniting with Culture Club. The 2018 release Life, credited to Boy George & Culture Club, returned him to the Top 20 of the U.K. album chart.
Born George Alan O’Dowd in Kent, England on June 14, 1961, Boy George gravitated toward music in the post-punk era. Weaned on glam and inspired equally by Siouxsie & the Banshees and Patti Smith, George attended punk clubs in England, making the scene at the Blitz club. Eventually, he gained the attention of Sex Pistol impresario Malcolm McLaren, who found O’Dowd’s androgyny compelling. McLaren decided George was right for the fledgling Bow Wow Wow, so he brought him in under the name Lieutenant Lush to Annabella Lwin’s Captain Lush. The two didn’t mesh, so O’Dowd departed so he could form his own group with bassist Mikey Craig, drummer Jon Moss, and Roy Hay. At this point, he adopted the name Boy George.
Calling themselves Culture Club, the band signed to Virgin and released their debut, Kissing to Be Clever, in 1982. Culture Club quickly became an international sensation, with “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me” reaching number one in the U.K., followed by number ones throughout Europe and a peak position of two in the U.S. Subsequent singles “Time (Clock of the Heart)” and, in North America, “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya,” kept the band in the Top 10, and Boy George’s wit and cross-dressing style made him a superstar. Colour by Numbers, the band’s second album, consolidated this success thanks to the hits Church of the Poison Mind and Karma Chameleon, the latter reaching number one in the U.K., Canada, and the U.S.
Waking Up with the House on FireCulture Club’s popularity started to slide with 1984’s Waking Up with the House on Fire. Its lead single, “The War Song,” reached number two in the U.K. but stalled at 17 in the U.S., Boy George’s star remained bright: he made cameos in The Max Headroom Show, The A-Team, and Perfect, a 1985 film set at Rolling Stone magazine. A fourth album, From Luxury to Heartache, appeared in 1986, and while its first single, “Move Away,” performed admirably – peaking at seven in the U.K. and 12 in the U.S. – the record soon slid down the charts, and the band split up.

Artists
Michael Jackson
The King of the Pop
Michael Jackson has won 15 Grammy awards, including the Legend and the Lifetime Achievement Awards, and 26 American Music Awards. He also had 13 #1 singles in the US. The first two are still-intact records, while the latter is a record for male artists. Jackson is the most awarded musician in history, with more than 200 awards. He also holds the record of having supported 39 charities, with the Guinness Book of Records recognizing his extensive humanitarian work in 2000.
A child prodigy, Jackson, or MJ, as he is more commonly known, continued his progress into adulthood, going on to become a pop culture phenomenon and one of the most iconic dancers in living history. His songs are the stuff of legends, and his various dance moves are ingrained into pop culture. He is also known for his humanitarian efforts, but is, conversely, equally infamous for the various scandals in his life.
Letâs take a deeper look into this legendâs life.
Jacksonâs childhood was difficult, and had a heavy influence on his life. His father was a very strict disciplinarian, and though Michael later attributed his success to the strict singing practice conducted by his father, it also had a demoralizing effect on the budding entertainerâs mindset. He suffered from various psychological issues, including chronic and persistent sleep problems, due to his childhood.
Solo Career
Collaboration with Quincy Jones
Jones was influential in Jacksonâs most famous release, Thriller, in 1982. This record-busting album is reputed to have sold more than 60 million copies, though certified sales only indicate about 42.4 million. It is the highest-selling album in music history, and established Michael as the King of Pop, a moniker that has now very much become his own. 7 singles from the album reached the top 10 in the Billboard Top 100 chart, which is a joint record. The music video of âBillie Jeanâ is among the most watched music videos of all time, and received regular airtime, consolidating the reputation of the nascent MTV in the process. It was also one of the very first music videos by a black artist to receive such consistent airtime, and one of the first to become equally popular across the racial divide. His success, aided by the furious efforts of CBS Music directors to get MTV to broadcast a black artistâs song, paved the way for future African American artists to receive as much airtime as white artists.
Quincy Jones first collaborated with Michael in 1979 on the album Off the Wall, a legendary production in its own right. Selling more than 20 million copies, it is also one of the best-selling albums of all time. With the success of Off the Wall, Jackson was able to secure the highest royalty rate in the music world : a whopping 37% of the albumâs profits, which later equated to almost USD 2 for each copy !
Five years after Thriller, Jackson released his final album with Jones, Bad, in 1987. It was hugely popular, reputedly selling more than 30 million copies. Though it didnât outsell Thriller, it bested it in one important aspect : five singles from Bad reached the top spot in the Billboard Top 100, which was the first time this feat had been achieved by a single album. It also became the first album to reach the top spot in 25 countries. The Bad world tour, held from September 1988-January 1989, broke multiple records of attendance in various countries ; the 570,000-strong people that watched him in Japan were almost three times the previous record in the country, and his seven sellout shows in Wembley Stadium London, totaling a crowd of 504,000 people, broke a Guinness World Record. In total, he performed 123 shows on this world tour, reaching out to 4.4 million people in the process.
Moonwalk
Michael at first declined the invitation, due to his reluctance to rejoin his brothers for a mini-reunion of the Jacksons, but was persuaded by Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown, on the condition that Michael be allotted a solo slot in addition to the group gig.
According to some, Jackson only practiced the moonwalk once at his home before brandishing it on air. The iconic movement, where the performer appears to slide backwards while apparently walking forward, was not created by Jackson, but spread like wildfire after it was popularized by one of the premier artists of the time. It was performed during the song âBillie Jeanâ, and became a staple in Jacksonâs subsequent live performances. This performance rocketed Jackson onto new heights of fame. In the words of Berry Gordy himself,
From the first beat of Billie Jean, I was mesmerized, and when he did his iconic moonwalk, I was shocked, it was magic, Michael Jackson went into orbit, and never came down.
In 1985, Jackson co-wrote We Are The World with Lionel Richie, for humanitarian purposes primarily in Africa. The song became one of the bestselling singles of all time.
The 1990s
The Dangerous world tour, starting in June 1992 and ending 17 months later in November 1993, drew 3.5 million listeners in 70 concerts. HBO bagged the broadcast rights of the world tour for USD 20 millionâa still-intact record.
In January 1993, Jackson also performed at the halftime show at Super Bowl XXVII. His performance, where he sang four songs, was the first halftime show to have more viewers than the match in progress!
HIStory : Past, Present and Future, released in 1995, went straight to the number one slot in several countries. It contained a compilation of MJâs hit singles, and also featured the lavishly made science-fiction video âScreamâ. The second single, âYou Are Not Aloneâ, surpassed the success of âScreamâ by becoming the first ever song to debut at the top spot in the Billboard Top 100. âEarth Songâ, the third single released from this album, reached the top position and became MJâs most successful single in the UK. âEarth Songâ gave a strong message to the viewers, as it addressed issues related to the environment and poverty. This album was reissued in 2001 as Greatest Hits : HIStory Volume I along with a second installment, HIStory Continues, and became the best-selling double album in history, with more than 20 million copies sold. The HIStory world tour, conducted between September 1996 and October 1997, included 82 concerts for a total audience of 4.5 millions.
The 2000s
By Jacksonâs astronomical standards, his only original album in the 2000s, Invincible, was not extremely popular. Having said that, it still managed to sell 13 million copies, in spite of being released at a time of a general slump in the music industry, without an accompanying world tour, and with very little promotion.

Controversies
Due to his fame, Michael Jacksonâs life was always under the microscope. His complicated personality and various long-standing psychological issues meant that he was never far from a controversy. He faced multiple child sexual abuse allegations, as well as general rumors about his mental health. His close association with his pet chimpanzee, Bubbles, in particular, spawned worldwide mocking and parody.

Prince
Unknown Duke
Prince Rogers Nelson (June 7, 1958 â April 21, 2016) was an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, actor, and director. He is known for his flamboyant and androgynous persona, eclectic work, and wide vocal range, which included a far-reaching falsetto and high-pitched screams. Prince’s music incorporated a wide variety of styles, including funk, R&B, rock, new wave, soul, synth-pop, pop, jazz, and hip-hop. He often played most or all instruments on his recordings.
American musician Prince achieved worldwide fame in the 1980s with ‘1999’ and ‘Purple Rain,’ the latter album also serving as the soundtrack for the popular film of the same name.
Who Was Prince ?
Prince’s early music career saw the release of Prince, Dirty Mind and Controversy, which drew attention for their fusion of religious and sexual themes. He then released the popular albums 1999 and Purple Rain, cementing his superstar status with No. 1 hits like “When Doves Cry” and “Let’s Go Crazy.” A seven-time Grammy winner, Prince had a prodigious output that included later albums like Diamonds and Pearls, The Gold Experience and Musicology. He died on April 21, 2016, from an accidental drug overdose.
Early Life
Famed singer, songwriter and musical innovator Prince was born Prince Rogers Nelson on June 7, 1958, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His parents were John Nelson, a musician whose stage name was Prince Rogers, and Mattie Shaw, a jazz singer who performed with the Prince Rogers Band.
The ’80s : ‘Purple Rain’ and Beyond
With his band the Revolution, Prince went on to create the classic album Purple Rain (1984), which also served as the soundtrack to the film of the same name, grossing almost $70 millions at the U.S. box-office. Co-starring Apollonia Kotero and Day, the movie garnered an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score.
Its melancholy title track reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, while the hits “When Doves Cry” and “Let’s Go Crazy” both reached No. 1. While “Crazy” readily joined the pantheon of wild, electrifying rock songs, “Doves Cry” had one-of-a-kind signatures, displaying an otherworldly meld of electronic and funk elements without a traditional chorus. The soundtrack offered two other hits : “I Would Die 4 U” and “Take Me With U.” Prince simultaneously became a well-known visual icon with his trademark curls, flowing jackets and ruffled attire with punk embellishments.
“Darling Nikki” was another tune from Purple Rain that incited controversy due to its explicit visuals. After senator Al Gore’s wife Tipper Gore bought the album for their daughter and listened to the track, she eventually pushed for albums to sport labels that warned parents of graphic lyrics.
1985 saw the release of Around the World in a Day, which had the Top 10 tracks “Raspberry Beret,” a whimsical mid-tempo tune, and “Pop Life.” The record continued to feature Prince’s penchant for playing a range of instruments and desire to impart messages of self-love, as seen with “Paisley Park,” a track inspired by the name of his Minneapolis studios.
In 1986 Prince released his eighth studio album, Parade, which included his pulsating No. 1 pop/R&B single “Kiss.” Parade served as the soundtrack for the artist’s second film, Under the Cherry Moon, which he directed and starred in.
Career Takes Off : ‘Controversy’ and ‘1999’
In 1978, Prince dropped his debut album, For You, which was followed by Prince (1979). He played practically all of the instruments on the albums, and the sophomore release contained his first Top 20 pop hit, the easygoing “I Wanna Be Your Lover.” The critically acclaimed Dirty Mind dropped in 1980, consisting of material that was graphic in its exploration of sexuality and fantasy.
Controversy (1981) continued playing with the themes of its predecessor, as seen with the dance-oriented title track, which reached No. 3 on the R&B charts, as well as songs like “Sexuality” and “Do Me Baby.” Yet as Prince continued to develop his career, he would also be known for tracks that had a deep spirituality, with a yearning for majesty and wonder. The singer found international success with the release of his 1982 album, 1999, which included the Top 20 title track, an exquisite synth-funk ode about nuclear doomsday, as well as the Top 10 hits “Little Red Corvette” and “Delirious.”
‘Sign ‘O’ the Times,’ ‘Batman’ Soundtrack
Maintaining a prodigious output, Prince released Lovesexy in 1988, known for its album cover featuring a photo of the artist in the nude as well as the Top 5 uptempo R&B hit “Alphabet St.”
By the time he released his 11th studio album, the soundtrack to Batman, in 1989, Prince had become one of America’s most commercially successful pop artists, continually making waves on the charts. Batman offered up the No. 1 romp “Batdance” as well as the Top 5 R&B hit “Partyman.” The video for “Batdance” famously featured Prince in split-effect makeup and costuming meant to symbolize both the film’s shadowy hero and his crazed nemesis, the Joker.
The Early ’90s : The New Power Generation
The early 1990s marked the launch of the New Power Generation, Prince’s latest band that featured a blend of contemporary R&B, hip-hop, jazz and soul along with the vocals of Rosie Gaines. The group was first called out in the soundtrack to Graffiti Bridge, a 1990 sequel to Purple Rain that didn’t fare well at the box-office yet still yielded the Top 10 track “Thieves in the Temple.”
With the NPG’s artistic contribution, Prince found success with his album Diamonds and Pearls (1991), which rose to No. 3 on the Billboard 200 album chart. Diamonds included the romantic title ballad, the industrial strength “Gett Off,” the playful paean “Insatiable” and the saucy No. 1 single “Cream.”
Prince’s work with the NPG continued to unashamedly toy with ideas around sexuality, gender norms and the body. To promote the album, Prince had appeared on the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards to do a live performance of “Gett Off.” Echoing parts of the track’s music video, the performance featured an array of dancers and musicians in an onstage bacchanal, with the artist famously turning around towards the end of the song to show off his seatless pants.
In the fall of 1992 Prince had signed a record $100 millions dollar deal with Warner Bros., which was considered “the largest recording and music publishing contract in history” at the time and allowed him the freedom to pursue TV, film, book and merchandising deals separately. As a comparison, fellow industry giants Michael Jackson and Madonna had $60 million-plus contracts that were all-inclusive.
Collaborations
Provocative performances aside, Prince had well established himself as an in-demand collaborator and behind-the-scenes player whose songs were remade by other artists. In the mid-’80s, Chaka Khan released an ebullient, highly successful cover of his 1979 tune “I Feel For You,” while Sinead O’Connor’s biggest hit was Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U.” The Art of Noise and Tom Jones reached the U.K. Top 5 in 1988 with a remake of “Kiss,” and Alicia Keys covered “How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore” on her own 2001 debut.
Prince also worked on specific album tracks for performers like Khan, Madonna, Tevin Campbell, Kate Bush, the Time, Martika, Patti Labelle and Janelle Monae. He was behind the girl group Vanity 6, led by singer/actress Vanity, and their No. 1 dance hit “Nasty Girl.” And he sent a song to the all-women’s band the Bangles that they would record to great effect, reaching No. 2 with the lush ode to a stressful workday, “Manic Monday.”
In 1992 Prince and the New Power Generation released Love Symbol Album. Though embraced by some critics, sales did not fare as well as Diamonds. Love only managed to have one Top 10 hit, the transcendent single “7,” though “My Name Is Prince” and the carnal “Sexy MF” garnered some attention as well. The following year Prince released the compilation box set The Hits/The B-Sides, which had an array of popular songs as well as the newly released “Pink Cashmere,” a tender number sung in falsetto.
Prince’s Symbol : ‘The Artist Formerly Known As Prince’
The lack of success for Love Symbol Album created tension between Prince and his record label Warner Bros. Over the ensuing years, the singer’s career went through a roller coaster of ups and downs. Turned off by feeling controlled by his label, Prince changed his name to the unpronounceable glyph O(+> in 1993, a fusion of female and male astrological symbols which he used until 2000.
During that time, he was more frequently referred to as “the artist formerly known as Prince,” and his new symbol was not embraced by most fans. He also started making appearances with the word “SLAVE” drawn on the side of his face, meant to convey the great disdain he had for his label. Prince did release the 1995 album The Gold Experience during this time of duress, and scored another Top 5 song with “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World.”
Once he was released from all contractual obligations to Warner Bros., Prince released the triple album fittingly entitled Emancipation (1996), which went on to become certified platinum and featured the soul remake “Betcha by Golly, Wow.” Several other albums affiliated with his NPG label soon followed, including Crystal Ball (1998) and Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic (1999).
Musicology, Super Bowl and More Accolades
After several years of relative obscurity, Prince returned to the limelight in 2004 to perform at the Grammy Awards with BeyoncĂ© Knowles, the same year he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That spring, he released Musicology with a tour that became the top concert draw in the United States. The album won two Grammys and added another dreamy ballad, “Call My Name,” to the Prince canon.
His next album, 3121, was released in 2006. That year, he wrote and performed “Song of the Heart” for the animated film Happy Feet, and won a Golden Globe (Best Original Song) for the composition. In 2007 he performed during the Super Bowl XLI halftime show on a massive stage shaped as his famous symbol amid pouring rain. The event was watched by 140 millions fans.
Death
On April 21, 2016, Prince was found dead at his Paisley Park compound in Minnesota. The week prior, his plane made an emergency landing and the singer was hospitalized for what was purportedly a severe case of the flu, though reports later stated that the musician was actually given a life-saving “safe shot” for a Percocet overdose. The Carver County sheriff’s department and Midwest Medical Examiner’s office launched an investigation into the cause of death. After the autopsy was performed, his remains were cremated and his close family and friends gathered for a small, private funeral on April 23.
Almost two weeks after the musician’s death, a lawyer revealed that Dr. Howard Kornfeld, a California-based physician who specializes in treatment for those dependent upon and addicted to pain medication, had been called upon by Prince’s team to aid the musician. (The performer had undergone hip surgery some years earlier, and was believed to have endured recurring discomfort while giving concerts.) Kornfeld’s son had reportedly flown to Prince’s compound to initiate the recovery process and was among those who found him dead. While Prince’s state of health at the time of his death is unknown, attorney William Mauzy said the artist “was dealing with a grave medical emergency” when Kornfeld was called, as reported by The Minneapolis Star Tribune.
On June 2, 2016, the Midwest Medical Examinerâs office released results of its investigation, which determined that Prince died from an accidental overdose of âself-administeredâ fentanyl, a synthetic opiate.
Tributes to a profoundly unique artist poured in from fans across the globe, as evidenced by impromptu memorials and celebrations of his work. With love especially hailing from the city where Prince was born and continued to live, thousands of mourners sang “Purple Rain” in downtown Minneapolis on the night of his death.
His Minnesota home/studio, Paisley Park, officially opened its doors as a museum in October 2016. The following month, his first posthumous song, “Moonbeam Levels,” was released. Additionally, production began on a documentary about the singerâs early years, entitled Prince: R U Listening?
On April 19, 2018, Carver County concluded its two-year investigation with the announcement that no criminal charges would be filed in Prince’s death. Attorney Mark Metz said that it was unknown who supplied the musician with the fentanyl-laced pills that killed him, and that there was no evidence that any associates knew he was ingesting such a dangerous substance.
“There is no doubt that the actions of individuals around Prince will be criticized and judged in the days and weeks to come,” Metz said. “But suspicions and innuendo are not sufficient in bringing criminal charges.”
Personal Life
Prince was extremely private about his personal life and preferred to spend time at his Paisley Park compound, away from the celebrity spotlight.
In the 1980s, Prince had a long on-and-off relationship with singer-songwriter Susannah Melvoin, the twin sister of Wendy Melvoin, a guitarist in Princeâs band the Revolution. He was also romantically involved with drummer extraordinaire Sheila E. The two worked together on her albums The Glamorous Life, featuring the Top 10 pop/R&B title track, and Romance 1600, showcasing the single “A Love Bizarre.”
On Valentineâs Day 1996, Prince married backup singer and dancer Mayte Garcia. The couple had a son, who was born on October 16, 1996, and died a week later from Pfeiffer Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. Prince and Garcia divorced in 1999.
In 2001, Prince married his second wife, Manuela Testolini, who had been employed by one of his charitable organizations. Their marriage ended in 2006. After their divorce, he had a relationship with one of his musical protégées, singer Bria Valente.
Religious Faith : Jehovah’s Witness
During the same year as his wedding to Testolini, Prince also became a Jehovahâs Witness, embracing the faith after years of study (he was raised as a Seventh-Day Adventist). His mentor as a Witness was bassist Larry Graham, who had played with Sly & the Family Stone and thus was also a major musical influence.
Prince was believed to have taken part in what’s referred to as field service for his faith, having once visited a Jewish couple in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and leaving behind a copy of the Witness publication The Watchtower. His language and performance sensibilities changed somewhat, with some fans questioning how some of the conservative aspects of his religion jibed with the explicit nature of past songs. Contradicting the rock/soul persona, others have pointed out that Prince has historically had songs that were clearly Christian in nature, as seen with “The Ladder,” “The Holy River,” “The Cross” and “God,” the gospel B-side to the single “Purple Rain.”

Knowles has also starred in several films, including Dream Girls. She married hip-hop recording artist Jay-Z in 2008 and the couple has three children. She also holds the record for most Grammy wins ever by a female artist with 28.

Solo Career
On the musical front, Knowles took center stage as a solo artist, releasing her first album, Dangerously in Love, in 2003. The recording became a huge success for her both commercially and critically. It sold millions of copies and won five Grammy Awards. On the album, Knowles worked with a number of different artists, including Missy Elliott, Sean Paul and Jay-Z. She was rumored to be dating Jay-Z around this time, but the couple did not publicly acknowledge their relationship.
Destiny’s Child released their last studio album, Destiny Fulfilled, in 2004, and officially broke up the following year.
On her own, Knowles continued to enjoy great success. Her second studio album, 2006’s B’Day featured such hits as “Irreplaceable” and “Deja Vu.” On the big screen, she starred opposite Jennifer Hudson, Jaime Foxx and Eddie Murphy in Dreamgirls. The film was adapted from the hit Broadway musical of the same name.
Marriage to Jay-Z
In 2008, Knowles married rapper and music mogul Jay-Z in a small, private ceremony in New York City. Among the guests sighted at the wedding were Knowles’ mother, Tina Knowles; father, Matthew; sister, Solange; Destiny’s Child members Rowland and Michelle Williams; and friend Gwyneth Paltrow.
The newlywed continued to work as hard as ever, promoting her latest effort, I am… Sasha Fierce (2008). Knowles scored two big hits off the album â “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” and “If I Were a Boy.” She also returned to the big screen that year, starring as R&B legend Etta James in Cadillac Records. The following January, Knowles sang James’ trademark song, “At Last,” for President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama at his inaugural ball.
In addition to acting and performing, Knowles ran a clothing line called House of Dereon with her mother. She also launched her own fragrance, Heat, in 2010. Throughout her career, Knowles has served as a spokesperson and model for several other brands, including L’Oreal and Tommy Hilfiger.
Knowles found herself under fire after performing a private concert for Libyan leader Muammar al-Qaddafi on New Year’s Eve in 2010. She later donated her fee from the event to help victims of the Haitian earthquake. According to some reports, Knowles said that her father had been responsible for arranging the Libyan concert. She decided to drop her father as her manager in March 2011. Later that year, Knowles reached the top of the album charts with her latest solo release, 4.
In January 2013, Knowles generated some negative headlines for her performance at President Obama’s second inauguration in Washington, D.C. She was criticized for reportedly pre-recording a version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and lip-syncing to her own track during the outdoor ceremony. Despite wide media coverage, in the days following the incident, Knowles did not publicly address the controversy.
Not long after, prior to her appearance at Super Bowl XLVII, Knowles performed the song live at a press conference. She explained to reporters that she had used a “backing track” at the inauguration, adding that she would “absolutely be singing live” at the NFL’s biggest event of the year, according to The Huffington Post.
Indeed, Knowles more than redeemed herself in the public eye at the Super Bowl on February 3, 2013. During the event’s halftime show, she took the stage and wowed the crowd, joined by her former Destiny’s Child bandmates Rowland and Williams for parts of her performance. Knowles also announced that her next major tour would start in the spring of 2013.
Awards, Accolades and Surprise Album
At the 2010 Grammy Awards, Knowles walked away with six honors â the most wins in a single night by a female artist. Her record was matched two years later by pop/soul artist Adele. In 2010, she also tied the record for most No. 1 hits on Billboardâs Pop Songs chart, which is based on radio airplay. In 2011, she made the Forbes Top 10 list of entertainment’s highest-earning women. By 2013, Knowles had won 16 Grammys.
Knowles broke records once again on December 13, 2013, with her fifth studio album, self-titled BeyoncĂ©. The album surprised fans and critics alike, as no promotion for the album had been announced prior to its release. The record, which Knowles called a “visual album,” was released exclusively on iTunes, with physical discs available for purchase after December 18. The record-breaking album sold more than 800,000 copies throughout the weekend it was released alone.Â
The collection â which was the fastest-selling album ever distributed by iTunesâalso marked Knowles’ fifth studio album to debut at No. 1, making her the first woman to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with her first five albums. She released the Platinum Edition of the album in 2014, and the following year won three additional Grammys, including a Best R&B Performance award for “Drunk in Love.”
Second Super Bowl and ‘Lemonade’
In February 2016, Knowles returned to the Super Bowl stage, once again earning raves for her performance. This time around she appeared with Bruno Mars and Chris Martin of the band Coldplay, highlighting her new single “Formation” and subsequently announcing a world tour. The tune, its video and accompanying halftime show also garnered a wave of attention for politicized lyrics and imagery touching on everything from Black power to Hurricane Katrina.Â
Just two months later, the hour-long Knowles conceptual film, Lemonade, which presented tracks from the album of the same name released immediately afterward. The cable special showcased the singer reeling from the romantic and sexual betrayal of her partner while acknowledging the strength found in communities of African American women. Tennis star Serena Williams and young actress QuvenzhanĂ© Wallis also made appearances in the New Orleans-based project, which was helmed by a variety of directors and featured poetry from Warsan Shire.Â
Lemonade the album was only initially available via Tidal, the online streaming service backed by Knowles’ spouse, Jay-Z, and then eventually became available on iTunes and Amazon with its accompanying film. Musical contributors to the project, which quickly garnered acclaim, included Jack White, The Weeknd, James Blake and Kendrick Lamar. Lemonade debuted at No. 1, making BeyoncĂ© the only artist in history to have all of her first six studio albums reach the top of Billboard’s album charts.
In February 2017, a pregnant Knowles delivered a surprise performance at the Grammys, singing songs from Lemonade amid a swirling spectacle of lights, holograms and backup dancers. Although she lost the coveted Album of the Year Grammy to Adele, she did take home two awards, for Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best Music Video.
Coachella, OTR II and ‘Everything Is Love’
In March 2018, reports surfaced that Knowles was working on new music and preparing to hit the road with Jay-Z. Following a false alarm in which a tour announcement appeared and quickly disappeared from her Facebook page, the power couple officially announced that their On the Run II (or OTR II) Tour would kick off in Cardiff, Wales, on June 6.
One year after she canceled a planned appearance at Coachella because of her pregnancy, Knowles took the stage for an eagerly anticipated performance at the April 2018 music festival. The first Black woman to headline the event, Knowles wowed attendees and critics alike with her top-shelf singing and choreography, delivering favorites like “Crazy In Love” and a rendition of the civil rights anthem “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” She was also joined during the two-hour set by hubby Jay-Z, sister Solange and her old Destiny’s Child cohorts, Rowland and Williams.
In June, Knowles and Jay-Z embarked on the European leg of their 48-date tour. While they lived up to expectations with their theatrics and swagger, the couple also surprised fans with the release of their joint album, Everything Is Love, following a London show on June 16. Initially available for streaming only on the Jay-Z-owned Tidal, the nine-track album was accompanied by a video for the track “Apes**t,” which featured the couple and their dancers gallivanting around some of the world’s most famous artworks at the Louvre in Paris.Â
‘Homecoming,’ ‘The Lion King,’ ‘Black Parade’ and ‘Black is King’
On April 17, 2019, Knowles released a documentary about her Coachella performance, Homecoming, and a surprise companion album which included 40 live tracks.
July brought the premiere of The Lion King, which featured Knowles as Nala, the childhood friend turned love interest of the titular character, played by Donald Glover. The singer also curated and produced a companion album for the production, titled The Lion King: The Gift, and released the single “Spirit” around the time of the film’s release.
In April 2020, Knowles surfaced on a remix of rapper Megan Thee Stallion’s “Savage,” with proceeds going to coronavirus relief efforts in their shared hometown of Houston.
In June 2020, Knowles surprised fans by releasing the song “Black Parade,” in honor of Juneteenth. The song was nominated for four 2021 Grammy Awards and won for Best R&B song. Knowles also made history at the 2021 Grammys by breaking the record for the most wins ever by a female artist with 28 total wins during her career.
In July 2020, Knowles directed, wrote and executive produced the visual album Black is King, which “reimagines the lessons of The Lion King for today’s young king and queens in search of their own crowns.”
Children
Following years of pregnancy rumors, Knowles and Jay-Z went public with the news of their impending new arrival in 2011, the mom-to-be showing off her growing baby bump at the MTV Video Music Awards that August.
Knowles and Jay-Z welcomed a baby daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, on January 7, 2012. The couple spared no expense to maintain their privacy during this special time, renting out a floor of New York’s Lenox Hill Hospital.
In February 2017, Knowles announced on Instagram that she and Jay-Z were expecting twins. Later, the iconic shot was revealed to be the year’s most-liked Instagram post, with 11.1 million fans offering their approval.
They welcomed twins, a boy and a girl, in June 2017. Although the couple didn’t immediately confirm the twins’ birth or their names, People magazine reported that they had filed trademark documents at the United States Patent and Trademark Office for the names Sir and Rumi. In the early morning hours of July 14, Knowles made it official, posting a photo in which she’s holding her one-month-old twins.
Bruno Mars
Grammy-winning singer/songwriter known for hit songs
Bruno Mars is Grammy-winning singer/songwriter known for such hit songs as Nothin’ on You, Just the Way You Are, Uptown Funk and That’s What I Like.
Who Is Bruno Mars?
Singer-songwriter Bruno Mars began to find success in the early 2000s by writing songs for popular artists, including K’Naan’s Wavin’ Flag. After several years as one of pop music’s premier songwriters, Mars broke out as a singer in his own right with the 2010 hit Nothin’ on You. Other popular songs by Mars include Just the Way You Are (2010), Locked Out of Heaven (2012) and the Grammy-winning tracks Uptown Funk (2015) and That’s What I Like (2017).
Early Life
Born Peter Gene Hernandez on October 8, 1985, in Honolulu, Hawaii, singer-songwriter Bruno Mars grew up in a very musical family. His father, Pete, was a Latin percussionist from Brooklyn, and his mother, Bernadette (Bernie), was a singer. Mars received his nickname, Bruno, while he was still a baby. The name Bruno came from baby times, older sister Jamie explained. Bruno was always so confident, independent, really strong-willed and kind of a bruteâhence the name Brunoâand it kind of just stuck.
In Waikiki Beach, Mars’s family performed a Las Vegas-style revue that included Motown hits, doo-wop melodies and celebrity impersonations. Growing up around entertainers, Mars began picking up musical instruments from early childhood. I’ve always had a drum set, a piano, a guitar … and never got trained to play. It was just always there, he later recalled. That’s just how I learned, just being surrounded by it my whole life. At the age of 4, he joined the family musical act as an Elvis impersonator and quickly become one of the stars of the show. He continued to perform with his family throughout his childhood, and as he approached adolescence he added Michael Jackson to his impersonation repertoire.
Move to Los Angeles
Mars attended Roosevelt High School, where he and several friends formed a band, the School Boys, performing classic oldies hits alongside his family’s act at the Ilikai Hotel in Honolulu. Mars credits his fearless stage presence to his unusual childhood. Performing from such a young age just got me so comfortable on stage, he said. Growing up performingâthat was normal for me. Everyone in my family sings, plays instruments. It’s what we do.
A friend introduced Mars to songwriter Phillip Lawrence, who agreed to help Mars compose material. They presented a song they had written and recorded to a record label, who liked it but wanted one of their own artists to perform it. Mars recalled, We were so broke and struggling, we had to do what we had to do, so we ended up selling the song. Initially, Mars was disappointed, but it proved to be an awakening experience. The light bulb went off, he explained. I decided to push the artist thing aside and get into the business this way. We can write songs and produce songs, so we just really focused our energy into writing for other artists. That’s how it all began.
By the early 2000s, Mars had begun to find success by writing songs for several popular artists, including Flo Rida’s smash hit Right ‘Round, Brandy’s Long Distance and Travie McCoy’s Billionaire. Mars also produced and co-wrote K’Naan’s Wavin’ Flag, Coca-Cola’s theme song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
After several years as one of the pop music industry’s premier songwriters, Mars finally broke out as a singer in his own right with the 2010 hit Nothin’ on You. The song was written for the Atlantic Records rapper B.o.B., but the record label decided to enlist Mars himself to croon the heartfelt chorus. The track proved an enormous hit, skyrocketing to No. 1 on the Billboard singles chart, and instantly transforming Bruno Mars from a behind-the-scenes composer into a pop performer.
